Why Performance Camshafts Need Better Valve Springs
A camshaft controls when the valves open, how far they open, how quickly they move, and when they close.
At lower engine speeds, controlling that movement is relatively easy. As RPM increases, however, the inertia of the valve, retainer, rocker arm, pushrod, and other valvetrain components begins working against the spring.
An aftermarket camshaft can increase that challenge considerably by opening the valve farther and accelerating it more aggressively than the factory profile.
If spring pressure isn't sufficient, the valvetrain can stop accurately following the camshaft. Instead of the valve opening and closing exactly as intended, the components can separate from the designed motion of the cam lobe.
That's why choosing a BTR Camshaft and choosing the proper spring package should be considered parts of the same decision—not two unrelated modifications.
How a BTR Dual Valve Spring Helps Control the Valvetrain
A BTR dual valve spring uses an inner and outer spring working together to provide the pressure and dynamic control required by higher-performance camshaft profiles.
The objective isn't simply to make the spring as stiff as possible.
Too little spring pressure can result in unstable valve motion. Excessive spring pressure can unnecessarily increase loads on the camshaft, lifters, pushrods, rocker arms, valve tips, and other components.

BTR Dual Valve Spring Kit .660" Lift Options
For many street and performance Gen V LT combinations, BTR's Platinum .660" spring is an excellent choice.
The SK008 spring package is rated for up to .660" valve lift and uses BTR's SP001 dual spring. BTR specifies approximately 155 pounds of spring pressure at 1.780" installed height, 380 pounds at 1.180", and 400 pounds at 1.130", with coil bind occurring at approximately 1.070".
Griffin Motorsports offers two versions depending on the valve guides installed in the cylinder heads:
SK008/BB – .660" Lift, OEM Valve Guides Designed for Gen V LT4 cylinder heads retaining the factory-style powdered-metal valve guides.
SK008/BZ – .660" Lift, Bronze Valve Guides Uses the same SP001 spring but includes locators designed around the different dimensions of bronze LT4 valve guides commonly found in modified or professionally prepared cylinder heads.
The distinction matters. The spring itself may be the same, but the hardware locating that spring on the cylinder head must match the guide configuration being used.
BTR Dual Valve Springs Kit .685" Lift Options
More aggressive camshaft combinations may require additional lift capability and spring control.
For those applications, Griffin Motorsports also offers BTR's Platinum Plus .685" spring packages.
SK704/0520/BB – .685" Lift, OEM Valve Guides Designed for Gen V LT4 cylinder heads retaining factory-style valve guides.
SK704/6560/BB – .685" Lift, Bronze Valve Guides Designed for cylinder heads using bronze valve guides and the corresponding larger-diameter spring locator.
These kits use BTR's SP010 dual valve spring and are intended for combinations requiring up to approximately .685" maximum valve lift.
The .685" kit isn't automatically "better" simply because it supports more lift. The correct spring should be matched to the camshaft, cylinder head, installed height, intended RPM, and complete valvetrain combination.

It's "What camshaft and cylinder heads are you running?"
Valve springs don't care whether the engine makes 600 horsepower or 1,200 horsepower. They care about the motion they're being asked to control.
Camshaft lift, lobe acceleration, engine RPM, valve mass, installed height, and the rest of the valvetrain determine what the spring actually has to do.

Why Valve Guide Type Matters When Choosing BTR Double Valve Springs
One of the easiest details to overlook when ordering BTR double valve springs is the valve guide itself.
Factory Gen V LT4 cylinder heads use powdered-metal valve guides. Many ported or professionally prepared cylinder heads are converted to bronze guides during machining.
Those guides have different outside dimensions, which means the valve spring locator sitting around the guide must also be different.
This is why Griffin Motorsports offers separate spring-kit selections for OEM valve guides and bronze valve guides.
If you're unsure which guides your cylinder heads use, verify that information with your engine builder before ordering. Choosing a spring kit based solely on maximum lift while ignoring the valve-guide configuration can result in ordering the wrong hardware for the cylinder head.
Why Pushrod Length Should Be Checked During a Camshaft Upgrade
Once the camshaft, cylinder heads, valve springs, retainers, lifters, or other valvetrain components change, assuming the original pushrod length remains correct can be a costly mistake.
Pushrod length directly influences hydraulic lifter preload and valvetrain geometry.
Decking the cylinder heads, changing head-gasket thickness, machining valve seats, changing lifters, altering the camshaft base circle, or installing different valvetrain components can all change the pushrod length the engine actually requires.
That's why Griffin Motorsports recommends measuring rather than guessing.
The BTR Pushrod Length Measuring Tool allows the engine builder to determine the correct pushrod length for the actual assembled engine. Once that measurement has been established, the appropriate BTR Chromoly One-Piece Pushrods can be selected for the combination.

Increasing spring pressure also increases the load transmitted through the rest of the valvetrain.
