If your like me, one of the first mods you did to your beloved 6th Gen. Camaro ZL1 was a full exhaust system which “for me” included a beautiful set of Stainless Steel American Racing Headers. Although I had them coated, the performance of my coating has been suspect, So we have been on the look out for a quality header wrap, and our search looked no further than the heat management specialists at DEI.
As you may know, upgrading to long tube stainless steel headers is a great bolt on modification for the LT4’s supercharged engine, but they come with draw backs. The most notable being the thinner wall tubing which not only allow for alot more engine noise to escape, but more detrimental is the HEAT. Having significant less thermal mass over the cast iron OEM manifolds, all tubular headers will radiate a significant amount more heat which can lead to increased surface temps upwards of 300F+ or more and surrounding ambient temps climbing 20%. This is clearly NOT good for surrounding brake lines, spark plug wires, fuel lines, and more.
Although we always suggest having your headers Jet Hot Coated, for many, this is not an option due to cost, lead time, or perhaps you purchased a car with non-coated headers. For you, you may want to consider wrapping your headers with DEI header wrap to help reduce under-hood temps, and potential heat soak / problems with surrounding materials.
After installation, the direct surface temp reduction can be expected to be 200-300F on the street and 300-500F on the track, and when paired with our GMS HIGH FLOW HOOD BRACKET these two modes combined can have a dramatic affect on your overall under-hood cooling efforts.
The DEI Titanium exhaust wrap is made from pulverized lava rock and stranded into a fiber material that’s woven into a proprietary diagonal weave. The DEI wrap is engineered to be stronger and more durable than other brands while being easier to install around tight bends. Designed to be pliable and resistant to chemical oil spills and vibration breakdown, it secures tightly without pre-wetting and can withstand direct heat up to 1800°F and intermittent heat up to 2500°F which is perfect for the supercharged LT4 applications.

NOTE: Wrapping of the catalytic converter is NOT recommended, as overheating can lead to reduced lifetime of the converter. DEI Wrap is NOT designed to be moved or removed after it has been heat cycled. After the fibers have been heated, they lose their initial flexibility. This does not reduce the thermal properties of the exhaust wrap. Be aware of this before you decide to remove the wrap. For this reason, you should avoid wrapping any flex-pipes or flex-joints.
Note about Titanium Exhaust Systems:
DEI does NOT recommend wrapping exhausts made of titanium. The alloys used in the production of titanium exhaust systems tend to be thin and are designed to dissipate heat quickly. Wrapping any titanium exhaust pipe, regardless of brand, can hold in too much heat, and make the titanium alloy turn brittle and prone to premature cracking. If you are seeking to reduce the heat on a titanium exhaust system, DEI recommends using alternatives such as our flexible heat shields.
